Removable Dentures - Everything You Need To Know

If you have lost a significant number of teeth to decay, damage, gum disease, or other dental issues, dentures are a great way to replace these missing teeth and improve the look of your smile. Removable dentures are custom-made and are held in place by either a metal framework or suction. They may feel strange initially, but dentures help to support your facial muscles and make it easier for those with missing teeth to speak and eat. Here are a few tips on how to adjust to your dentures and how to best care for them.

Eating

It’s best to stick to softer foods when you are first adjusting to your new dentures. Once you get used to eating with your dentures, you will be able to enjoy all of your favorite meals like you did before you began losing teeth. Try chewing on both sides of your mouth to avoid dislodging your dentures while eating.

Cleaning

It is important to clean your dentures regularly – just like you would brush your natural teeth daily. Rinse your dentures with cold water after you eat, brush them at least once a day with a soft toothbrush, and use denture cleaner or dish soap rather than regular toothpaste.

Sleeping

Dentists recommend that you take your dentures out while you sleep to give your gums a little breathing time and avoid irritation. Keep your dentures submerged in a glass of water or denture cleaner overnight. It is important to make sure they stay moist while they aren’t in your mouth so they don’t dry out and begin to warp.

Adjusting to dentures can take time, but soon enough you’ll be used to your new, youthful smile. If you feel that dentures would be a good way to restore your smile, contact Awesome Dentistry!
